EMS e-News 9, November 2013

  • The EU's new programme for research and innovation will be adopted before the end of this year. It will run from 2014 until 2020 with a budget of about 70 billion Euros. More information on
  • Under "Excellent Science Priority" one can find the most suitable opportunities for mathematics. In particular, we point out the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (MSC), the European Research Council (ERC) and Future Emerging Technologies (FET).
  • First calls of HORIZON 2020 are expected to be published either at the end of 2013 or early in 2014.
  • The tentative deadlines for submission of proposals to MSC actions are as follows.
    • Innovative training networks (ITN) : 8/04/2014;
    • Individual fellowships (IF): 10/04/2013;
    • Co-funding of regional, national and international programmes (COFUND): 18/11/2014.
  • Mathematics has its own evaluation panel. The distribution of the budget of the call over the disciplines will be proportional to the number of eligible proposals received in each panel.
    Hence, we strongly encourage brilliant researchers to apply.
  • Calls for Starting, Consolidator, Advanced and Proof of Concept Grants published by the ERC are expected to have as deadlines 25/03/2014, 3/06/2014, 21/10/2014 and 28/04/2014, respectively.

Portuguese Mathematical Society
The Portuguese Mathematical Society’s TV programme “This is Mathematics” was awarded the Special Tribute Award VerCiência 2013, "for the excellence of the programmes produced, which present topics of mathematics in an attractive and enjoyable way".
The award was given by the International Exhibition of Science on TV VerCiência, held in Brazil between October 21 and November 3. This tribute is assigned annually to a TV programme, series or channel in recognition of its relevant contribution to the spreading of knowledge and dissemination of scientific culture through television.
“This is Mathematics" is broadcasted by SIC, produced by Sigma 3 and supported by COMPETE and Ciência Viva.
