A2. Collaborative research visits: PhD Development

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The Applicant must hold a Master degree or equivalent and be enrolled in a PhD program in areas of pure or applied mathematics or statistics
  2. The Applicant must be based (e.g. place of work/study) in Africa
  3. The Applicant must have already established contact with a mathematician in the host institution and should have a definite research plan at the time of application
  4. The research visit should be at least of one month long. A typical visit is of three month.
  5. The Applicant should have been granted appropriate leave of absence from his/her institution for the period of the visit
  6. The Host institution must have agreed to provide working space and access to necessary facilities to work (e.g. internet, library)
  7. The Host institution must have agreed to partially support the research visit: e.g. local living expenses, accommodation.

About the Applicant

Letter from the Host institution approving the research visit by providing an appropriate working environment during the period and confirming in what way the host intend to financially support the visit (e.g. local living expenses, accommodation, transport, etc).

About the research plan

Upload one file with the following information:

  1. Description of the topic, research problem, and plans for development during the visit and beyond
  2. Expected interaction during the visit with the research group at the host institution
  3. Expected direct and indirect outcome of the research visit

Present at the best possible level of detail information about:

  1. Expected travel expenses
  2. Expected accommodation expenses
  3. Expected living expenses
  4. Other co-support obtained from
    • - Institute of origin
    • - Host institution support
    • - Other (co-) sponsoring programs or national foundations

As general guidelines the requests for travel (only economy tickets are considered) should not exceed USD 1300, the requests for accommodation and living expenses should not exceed USD 1450 altogether. The final allocation will be considered in view of the average living costs and local arrangements.

It is responsibility of the Applicant to provide all necessary, complete, and truthful information for the evaluation.

The applications will be circulated among a selection committee constituted by 4 members of the EMS-CDC and 3 associates members. The committee reserves itself the possibility of contacting external experts in the field of research.

The evaluation will give weight to the quality of the applicant research plans and to the feasibility of the research visit.  For this the completeness of the information in the application is fundamental.
