Scientific Programmer in Global Climate Modeling

The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM, supports research activities in climate modeling and climate data analysis of more than 25 groups from several partner institutions in the Zurich area. In particular, C2SM and ETH are currently involved in the development, maintenance, and hosting of the aerosol and chemistry model HAMMOZ (, which is currently coupled to the MPI Earth Sytem Model (MPI-ESM). In the coming year, coupling of HAMMOZ to the recently developed global climate model ICON is planned.

Scientific Programmer in Global Climate Modeling

C2SM is seeking to appoint a Scientific Programmer (100%) to support climate scientists in maintaining the MPI-ESM-HAMMOZ climate-aerosol model, developing the coupled ICON-HAMMOZ model, and porting and testing of climate codes on new computer architectures. In plus you provide support in developing model output pre- and post-processing tools, managing model input data, and in the provision of support to climate model users.

You have a Master or PhD in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related fields, excellent programming skills in Fortran and possibly C/C++, in a Linux/Unix environment, and experience in high-performance computing and parallel programming. Additionally, you have practical knowledge in handling large datasets and usual climate data formats (e.g., netCDF), ability to work as part of a model development / managing team and to collaborate with colleagues with a wide range of scientific backgrounds and levels of expertise, and ability to, and interest in, providing support to students and scientists within a large community. Of course, you are interested in climate sciences in a broad sense and have excellent communication skills in English Initial appointment at ETH Zürich is for 2 years with possibility of extension. Expected starting date is March 2014.
