Call for Proposal 2011 at the CIEM

The CIEM (International Center for Mathematical Meetings) is now seeking activity proposals for the year 2011. CIEM is a joint initiative of the University of Cantabria and the Municipality of Castro Urdiales whose fundamental and fundational goal is to promote quality mathematical research, be it in its more basic or its more applied and computational aspects, with special emphasis to multidisciplinar ventures. It has been organizing some 10 to 15 events every year since its foundation, in 2006.

Prof. Andrzej Pelczar died on May 18, 2010

We regret to inform you that Prof. Andrzej Pelczar died on May 18, 2010. Prof. Pelczar was a strong proponent of European mathematics, serving as member of the Executive Committee and Vice President of the European Mathematical Society. CALL FOR RESEARCH PROGRAMMES AT THE CENTRE DE RECERCA MATEMÀTICA, Bellaterra, Barcelona

The Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) invites proposals for Research Programmes for the academic year 2012-2013.

CRM Research Programmes consist of periods ranging between three months and nine months of intensive research in a given area of the mathematical sciences and their applications. Researchers from different institutions are brought together to work on open problems and to analyse the state and perspectives of their area.

Call for proposals - Graphs in Geometry and Algorithms (EuroGIGA) - deadline for applications 29 March 2010

The European Science Foundation (ESF) has recently published a Call for outline proposals for the
the first EUROCORES programme in the field of Mathematics, focusing specifically on Graphs in Geometry and Algorithms, and in particular the following topics;

(i) Drawing graphs
(ii) Geometric representations of graphs
(iii) Skeletal structures and spatial decompositions
(iv) Combinatorics of discrete point sets
(v) Graphs of polytopal structures

Consensus Conference of the EMS-ESF Forward Look on Matematics and Industry, Madrid, 26-27 April

On April 26-27 the Consensus Conference of the EMS-ESF Forward Look on Matematics and Industry will be organized in Madrid. This event is part of the official agenda of the Spanish Presidency of the EU.

Membership dues

The annual dues for corporate members will be expressed in terms of a unit fee x, fixed by the Council for any one year. Full members in classes 1, 2, 3, and 4 shall pay x, 3x, 5x, and 8x respectively in annual dues. Associate members shall pay an annual fee of x. Academic institutional members shall pay an annual fee of x. Other institutional members shall pay an annual fee of 3x.

The annual dues for individual members shall be expressed in terms of a unit fee y, fixed by Council for any one year.

Prestigious prize for Imperial mathematician who solved 140 year old maths problem

Darren Crowdy, Professor of Applied Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London has been awarded the ‘2009 CMFT Young Researcher Award’ at the Computational Methods and Function Theory (CMFT) conference 2009.
Professor Crowdy’s conformal mapping research hit the headlines last year when he updated the 140 year old Schwarz-Christoffel formula so it could be used for more complicated shapes and, therefore, in more diverse applications in physics and engineering.

The CIEM (International Center for Mathematical Meetings, in Spanish) is a joint initiative of the University of Cantabria and the Municipality of Castro Urdiales whose fundamental and fundational goal is to promote quality mathematical research, be it in its more basic or its more applied and computational aspects, with special emphasis to multidisciplinar ventures. It is based in the cantabrian town of Castro Urdiales, of indisputable touristic value and conveniently placed in the A8 motorway, 35 km from Bilbao airport and 60 km from Santander.

sigma CETL Prizes for Outstanding Contribution to Mathematics And Statistics Support

In 2009, sigma – the centre for excellence in university-wide mathematics and statistics support - wishes to award two personal prizes to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the field of mathematics and statistics support.

Prizes and Eligibility:
One personal prize of £1000 to an individual employed by a UK higher education institution.
One personal prize of £1000 to an individual employed by a higher education institution based outside the UK.

Both award winners will be named: sigma Outstanding Contributor 2009.
