Mathematician new Minister of Education, Higher Education and Science in Portugal

Nuno Crato, professor of mathematics and statistics at the Technical University of Lisbon, took office as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Science as an independent in the cabinet of the Portuguese Government led by Pedro Passos Coelho on June 21, 2011.
Crato's research work focuses on stochastic processes and time series with various applications, including climate and finance. He is author and co-author of several books popularizing mathematics and science. The European Mathematical Society awarded him in 2003 the first prize in an article competition for a series of newsletter articles featuring advances in cryptography. The European Union awarded him in 2008 a European Science Award for Science Communicator of the Year. Crato has been a member of the Raising Public Awareness Committee of the EMS since 2011.
