Job Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the department of mathematics, Tampere University of Technology (TUT). The inverse problems group at TUT, led by professor Mikko Kaasalainen, is part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems Research, and has an extensive domestic and international collaboration network. The group carries out interdisciplinary research, currently with applications in space research, environmental sciences, remote sensing, astrophysics, and mathematical physics. The postdoc will initially work in the ongoing projects, but the group is actively interested in all promising new directions of research that may later be pursued.

The candidate should have a PhD (or obtain one in early 2012) in mathematics, applied mathematics, engineering, theoretical physics, or astrophysics. Experience in inverse problems related to tomography or electromagnetic radiation is considered an advantage (but not a requirement). The candidate should also have experience in scientific computing and program development (Matlab, C, C++, Fortran, or equivalent). Much of the software developed in the projects will be adapted for grid computing at Tampere Centre for Scientific Computing.

The salary is on level 5 in the universities' salary system (YPJ, academic personnel), with an additional part based on personal performance (currently, gross salary 3100-3900 euros per month). The period of employment is two years, with a possibility of extension. The starting date is preferably between 1 January 2012 and 1 March 2012.

The application should contain 1) a cover letter describing the candidate's research interests and motivation as well as any other relevant information not mentioned below, 2) CV (including programming experience), 3) a list of publications and 4) at least two recommendation letters (one of which can be the PhD examiner's statement). The items 1-3 should be merged into a single PDF file; item 4 can be included in the file as well or sent directly by email.

The application should be sent to professor Mikko Kaasalainen, mikko.kaasalainen@tut.fi (http://math.tut.fi/~kaasalam). You are also welcome to contact him for further information. The application should be received by 30 November 2011.
