The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is seeking a Department Chairperson. The successful candidate is expected to lead the research and academic programs in the department, and to develop and implement a strategic vision of the Department's future, compatible with existing strengths and opportunities.
We desire candidates with a record of excellence in conducting and directing a prominent, nationally and internationally recognized research program, as well as a strong commitment to academic leadership, high-quality teaching, and the ability to work across academic units. The Department of Mathematical Sciences, with a current full-time faculty of 47 members offers academic programs leading to B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics. The Department also offers a Ph.D. in Biostatistics jointly with the Department of Biostatistics in the IU School of Medicine. Bachelor's degree options include Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Secondary School Teaching. Master's degree options include Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and Mathematics Education.
Areas of current research of the faculty are diverse and include integrable systems, mathematical physics, dynamical systems, noncommutative geometry, operator algebras, differential geometry, partial differential equations, functional analysis, statistics and probability, applied mathematics, biomathematics, computational neurosciences, and scientific computing. Strong collaborations exist between the department faculty and colleagues from within the School of Science, and from the Schools of Medicine and Engineering, as well as with scientists in local industry including Eli Lilly & Co.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics or a related field and a track record demonstrating significant research, funding, and teaching activities appropriate to this senior appointment. The successful candidate must have good leadership skills and the ability to interact well with diverse constituencies including students, staff and faculty. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to quality research and teaching.
