It is my pleasure to write the preface for the first issue of the EMS e-News, the electronic newsletter from the European Mathematical Society. This publication aims to increase contact with our members, and to spread news of interest for mathematicians. In a direct, telegraphic, and informal style, you will find headlines, news from members, from the committees, and from the EMS Publishing House, among others. Thus, it will complement the function of some sections of the EMS webpage, such as "news", "conferences", and "jobs". Initially, we plan to release e-News four times per year. This will happen between consecutive issues of the printed version of the Newsletter, the magazine of record of the EMS. The Editor of the newly born EMS e-News is Mireille Chaleyat-Maurel. For the EMS, it is a privilege to count on her for this important task. I am fully confident that this initiative will result in stronger communication and co-operation with our membership.
- Consultation by the European Commission on ERA (European Research Area).
On September 13, the European Commission launched a consultation on the European Research Area. This aims at gathering views on several crucial issues concerning researcher's career mobility, research infrastructures and open access among others.
More information and access to the questionnaire can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/research/consultations/era/consultation_en.htm
Everybody is invited to participate (the deadline is 30.11.2011).
- ERC Synergy Grants
The European Research Council ERC has launched a new type of granting scheme that will fund small excellent research teams. ERC Synergy Grants are intended to enable a small group of Principal Investigators and their teams to bring together complementary skills, knowledge, and resources in new ways, in order to jointly address research problems.
ERC Synergy Grants can amount up to 15 million Euros per grant; each grant for up to 6 years.
Deadline for applications: January 2012.
