It is my pleasure to write the preface for the first issue of the EMS e-News, the electronic newsletter from the European Mathematical Society. This publication aims to increase contact with our members, and to spread news of interest for mathematicians. In a direct, telegraphic, and informal style, you will find headlines, news from members, from the committees, and from the EMS Publishing House, among others. Thus, it will complement the function of some sections of the EMS webpage, such as "news", "conferences", and "jobs". Initially, we plan to release e-News four times per year. This will happen between consecutive issues of the printed version of the Newsletter, the magazine of record of the EMS. The Editor of the newly born EMS e-News is Mireille Chaleyat-Maurel. For the EMS, it is a privilege to count on her for this important task. I am fully confident that this initiative will result in stronger communication and co-operation with our membership.
