Job Description: 

For more than 260 years, De Gruyter has been publishing high quality works of scholarship in all
areas of the humanities and natural sciences. Today, De Gruyter publishes some 500 academic
journals, offers a wide range of digital media, and releases more than 800 new titles each year – half
of them in English.

We are currently seeking to expand our staff at the earliest possible date with a full-time:

Editorial Director, Math/Physics (m/f)

You will assist at our Berlin office with the planning and strategic development of our math and
physics portfolio. Your responsibilities will include:

• The supervision and further development of our periodical and book portfolio, including the
acquisition of new publications
• Collaboration with our scientific partners as well as active efforts to find new publishers and
authors for our products, both in Germany and abroad
• Development and management of budgets for the areas under your responsibility
• The publication of planned titles under consideration of the agreed upon cost volumes and
planned revenues

You will manage a team of highly motivated employees within the editorial department. A
prerequisite for this position is a completed university degree in Mathematics or Physics, preferably a
PhD. Ideally, you should already have numerous years of experience in the management of
publishing house portfolios or comparable core qualifications based on your employment at a
research institute. Ideally, you have excellent contacts in academic circles thanks to your past
experience. You will maintain and develop these ties through conference trips and interactions with
scientists and research groups.

You should have an excellent understanding of project management, and be experienced in
developing plans within teams and implementing them while fulfilling deadlines and goals. You
should be skilled in dealing with a work environment marked by complex relationships. You should
possess team spirit and excellent communication skills, and be able to leverage your very strong
leadership abilities in a goal-oriented manner. Strong mastery of written and spoken English and
German as well as a readiness to work flexible hours and travel are a necessity for our collaboration
with international authors and publishers. Experience living abroad is desired.
