Applications are invited for postdoctoral research fellowships in an ERC Advanced Grant project "Stochasticity in Spatially Extended Deterministic Systems and via Homogenization of Deterministic Fast-Slow Systems" to work with Professor Ian Melbourne.
This project involves a mathematically-rigorous study of the probabilistic and stochastic properties of deterministic dynamical systems. Specific projects can be tailored to your interests and background. Possible topics include:
(a) Convergence of fast-slow deterministic systems (via homogenization) to a stochastic differential equation. The limiting SDE can be driven by a Brownian motion or a stable Lévy process, and one of the challenges is to determine the correct interpretation of the relevant stochastic integrals.
(b) Diffusion and anomalous diffusion in spatially extended (especially Euclidean-symmetric) deterministic dynamical systems. This can be viewed as a problem in ergodic theory; namely to understand the statistical properties of a certain class of observables of a compact group extension.
You will have a PhD or equivalent in Mathematics, with a strong background in one or more of the areas of ergodic theory, stochastic analysis and probability theory.
Following submission of the online application form you will need to submit your curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a research statement and 3 letters of recommendation to Georgina.Copeland@warwick.ac.uk
