The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an award-winning network of centres for training and research in the mathematical sciences. AIMS has been training some of the most talented young Africans since 2003 and providing them with the skills, knowledge, networks and inspiration to go on to leadership careers in academia, industry and governance. Each AIMS centre forms strong national and international partnerships with universities and other institutions. The AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI, www.nexteinstein.org) was launched in 2008 to scale up AIMS’ impact through building new AIMS centres in order to respond to the needs across Africa. Today, there are AIMS centres in South Africa (established 2003, www.aims.ac.za), Senegal (established 2011, www.aims-senegal.org) and Ghana (established 2012, www.aims.edu.gh). The establishment of a centre in Cameroon is planned for 2013. Our major donors include the Government of Canada, the Government of the UK, Google, the Government of South Africa, the Government of Senegal, the Government of Ghana and numerous other donors across the world.
The AIMS Next Einstein Initiative is seeking to hire two Directors – one for AIMS-Ghana and one for AIMS-Cameroon.
The Director is the head of the AIMS centre – an AIMS centre is an internationally visible centre of excellence that undertakes activities in the teaching, research and outreach of mathematical sciences. Leading an initial staff of 5-7 people (including a Chief Operating Office and Academic Director), the Director will guide the establishment of the centre and form strong international, regional and national linkages. Operating as an autonomous node of the AIMS network, the Director is responsible for the growth of the institute, scientific and academic directing, development of new programmes, international-class academic standards and overseeing administration and operations.
The AIMS model provides a rich academic environment, hosting at least 25 highly-qualified academic visitors annually. The Director will be expected to actively lead the establishment and operation of a research centre at the AIMS Centre.
The appointment is expected to be made for a 5 year term.
We seek a unique person, who:
One Directorship is open at AIMS-Ghana and another Directorship is open at AIMS-Cameroon.
