The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an award-winning network of centres for training and research in the mathematical sciences. AIMS has been training some of the most talented young Africans since 2003 and providing them with the skills, knowledge, networks and inspiration to go on to leadership careers in academia, industry and governance. Each AIMS centre forms strong national and international partnerships with universities and other institutions. The AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI, was launched in 2008 to scale up AIMS’ impact through building new AIMS centres in order to respond to the needs across Africa. Today, there are AIMS centres in South Africa (established 2003,, Senegal (established 2011, and Ghana (established 2012, The establishment of a centre in Cameroon is planned for 2013. Our major donors include the Government of Canada, the Government of the UK, Google, the Government of South Africa, the Government of Senegal, the Government of Ghana and numerous other donors across the world.
The AIMS Next Einstein Initiative is seeking to hire two Directors – one for AIMS-Ghana and one for AIMS-Cameroon.

Position Summary:
The Director is the head of the AIMS centre – an AIMS centre is an internationally visible centre of excellence that undertakes activities in the teaching, research and outreach of mathematical sciences. Leading an initial staff of 5-7 people (including a Chief Operating Office and Academic Director), the Director will guide the establishment of the centre and form strong international, regional and national linkages. Operating as an autonomous node of the AIMS network, the Director is responsible for the growth of the institute, scientific and academic directing, development of new programmes, international-class academic standards and overseeing administration and operations.

The AIMS model provides a rich academic environment, hosting at least 25 highly-qualified academic visitors annually. The Director will be expected to actively lead the establishment and operation of a research centre at the AIMS Centre.

The appointment is expected to be made for a 5 year term.

Person Summary:
We seek a unique person, who:

  • Has the skills to run an academic institution of high international calibre with requisite management and academic expertise
  • Relishes the opportunity to establish and manage an AIMS centre based on an proven and award-winning model including taught, research and outreach programmes
  • Has the drive to innovate and lead change through the programmes at the centre
  • Is able to lead a team of volunteer academics, students and administrative staff in the smooth and efficient operation of the institute

One Directorship is open at AIMS-Ghana and another Directorship is open at AIMS-Cameroon.


  • Establishing and setting directions for the academic programme including areas of specialization, partnerships and other major programmatic aspects
  • Ensuring the proper functioning of the academic programmes, including student admissions, curriculum development and lecturer selection
  • The operations and growth of the AIMS centre and research centre

Management, Representation and Fundraising

  • Communicating the vision and mission of AIMS and the centre to the government, other partners, African and international academic communities, and to the general public
  • Building and maintaining constructive relations with universities in the host country and across Africa, as well as international partner universities and other organisations
  • Regularly reporting to all supporters of the centre on the use of all funds provided


  • A doctorate in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related discipline
  • An established research and teaching profile with extensive experience in the management of advanced teaching programmes and research
  • A proven track record of entrepreneurial, innovative, successful management and institution building
  • Experience in responsibly managing financial and other resources
  • A strong commitment to the development of the mathematical sciences in Africa
  • Strong leadership qualities
  • Good working knowledge of English

The following characteristics would be advantageous:

  • A profound understanding of the importance of research, the ability to engage successfully with government, non-profit and private sector partners
  • Bilingual (English/French)
