This post is a part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network “Hydrodynamic Transport at Ecologically Critical Heterogeneous Interfaces” (HYTECH). The candidate will be required to register for a Doctoral degree and will be expected to complete the requirements of the degree within the 36 month duration of the project. An appointee will work on the development of the theoretical frameworks for integration of physical interactions between flow and biota (e.g., vegetation, bed mussels). Spatially averaged hydrodynamic and biomechanical equations, which couple flow and organisms together through a rigorous spatial averaging operation, will be explored among other approaches. Such equations can be formulated for both fluid and organisms, which are coupled through interface terms describing physical interactions and/or exchange of substances. Key project goals include: (1) development of the unifying framework for coupling flow and biota and upscaling from the organism scale to the river reach scale; and (2) test of the developed frameworks and techniques for the case of vegetated beds and mussel beds.
