Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Statistics
at the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics performs research and provides education on undergraduate to postgraduate levels in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, and mathematical logic. The number of employees is almost 100, of which 30 are PhD students. The number of full-time students is ca 600.

Description of the field: The area encompasses probability theory, stochastic processes, statistical theory, and stochastic modelling as applications of these, especially within financial mathematics, natural sciences, technology, and medicine.

Duties: The position includes teaching and administration in mathematical statistics and financial mathematics, as well as research in mathematical statistics.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for a position as associate professor, the applicant must hold a Ph.D and, unless there are special exceptional circumstances, have completed suitable pedagogical training for teaching at university level or have corresponding qualifications and pedagogic proficiency. According to the appointment regulations of Uppsala University it is also a general requirement that teachers have any other skills which are necessary to carry out their duties proficiently. Teaching skills must be well documented such that the quality can be assessed.

The ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement. The holder is expected to teach in Swedish within two years.

A person who is offered a position as associate professor/senior lecturer will be employed as professor if she/he has requested this and is subsequently judged to be sufficiently competent. Employment as professor is possible only if the application and request for promotion are received at the latest December 31, 2010.

Ranking: In ranking eligible candidates, equal importance will be given to scientific and pedagogic proficiency. In examining the scientific proficiency particular importance will be attached to research qualifications within mathematical statistics. Experience of teaching financial mathematics is of merit.

In examining the pedagogic proficiency, skills and experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination within the subject field, will be considered.

In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of documented qualifications, competence and skills, is judged the most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
